nativeamericancrafts.ca is owned and operated by Abordigital Enterprises. The proprietor of the company, Annette Peltier, has been involved with various aspects of the local craft industry throughout her life.
While residing with her paternal grandmother, Annette (aka Annut) Peltier and her siblings were taken on trips in surrounding areas to harvest sweetgrass, acorns, and purchase crafts from local craftspeople. Once enough crafts had been accumulated, they embarked on sales trips across Canada and the northern United States. It is accurate to say that it was during these trips Annette Peltier and her siblings learned the art of tactful negotiation, and obtained much of their business sense. She was educated at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario where she obtained a certificate for Art Fundamentals (1 year) and almost completed the Illustration program (3 years). For the past ten years, she has been marketing various organizations through a variety of media. The company is located on the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, Canada.
This website was originally developed in recognition of the need to assist local craftspeople in continuing to produce their chosen crafts (both traditional and contemporary) while propogating a feasible alternative to mainstream employment. It was the ultimate goal of the management to disseminate a large volume of crafts while maintaining a high standard of authenticity to customers worldwide.
This site was a pilot project the examine the feasibility of marketing specialty products on the internet.
Since then, the site has evolved to become a referral point for individual artists to post information about themselves to prospective clients. Information can either be secure (password protected for selective access) or open to the public.
